Bullets & Ballistics

Ballistics is the science of projectiles, specifically focusing on their launching, flight, and impact. It's often divided into three main areas: internal, external, and terminal ballistics. Bullet design and construction play a significant role in their performance, as does the environment they travel through.

  • Internal Ballistics: This deals with the forces within the gun during the firing process, including the bullet's acceleration and movement through the barrel.
  • External Ballistics: This focuses on the bullet's flight path from leaving the barrel to hitting the target, considering factors like gravity, air resistance, and wind.
  • Terminal Ballistics: This examines the impact of a bullet on a target, including the bullet's penetration and deformation.
  • Forensic Ballistics: This specialized area uses ballistics principles to analyze bullets and cartridge cases found at crime scenes, often involving comparing them to test-fired bullets from suspected weapons.
  • Ballistic Coefficient (BC): This is a measure of a bullet's efficiency in flight, taking into account its shape and density, which affects how quickly it loses velocity.

Bullet Types:
Bullet designs vary, with round-nose, hollow-point, and jacketed bullets being common examples, each affecting their impact and penetration.
Rifle cartridges can withstand higher pressures than handgun cartridges, allowing for more powder and increased energy output,
Understanding ballistics is crucial for various applications, including firearms safety, hunting, and crime scene investigation.

45 Long Colt

The .45 Colt (11.43×33mmR), often called the .45 Long Colt, is a rimmed, straight-walled, handgun cartridge dating to 1872.

The .45 Long Colt is a handgun cartridge known for its versatility and power, particularly in revolvers and lever-action rifles. It's not as powerful as a .44 Magnum or a .357 Magnum but is still capable of taking down deer-sized game and heavier loads can be used for larger animals.
